U.S. law enforcement agents also used Hydra’s “Bitcoin Bank Mixer” to launder money in November 2021. The indictment further explains how Hydra vendors offered fake identifications, including passports and driver’s licenses, and hacking services. The platform enabled users to hire sophisticated hackers to target victims and gain access to their private information and take over online accounts.
Understanding the Darknet Market
- One of the most well-known technologies enabling darknets is the Tor network, which was developed by the U.S.
- However, the uncertainty has not prevented the proliferation of dark web marketplaces.
- On July 20th Hansa was shut down following the takedown of AlphaBay on July 4th.
- Identification of addresses by Chainalysis Inc. related to illicit activities has been relied upon in many law enforcement investigations29,30.
- Furthermore, they could make fake Eternos websites and spread links to them in order to phish Eternos clients credentials or damage their brand.

The darknet market refers to a hidden segment of the internet that is not indexed by traditional search engines. It is often associated with illegal activities, including the sale of drugs, weapons, and stolen data. To comprehend how big the darknet market is, it is essential to understand its structure, scope, and implications for society.
What is the Darknet?
The darknet is the part of the internet that requires specific software to access, such as Tor or I2P. This section of the internet allows users to remain anonymous, which has made it a haven for illicit transactions.
Legal web markets often use the price comparison function to allow customers to compare prices with other online markets. Displaying discount prices or waiving shipping fees can act as a marketing ploy. Another trust-building factor is offering a wide range of products so that customers can choose between, for example, goods of lower or higher quality or from various manufacturers. The importance of weight, value, potency, purity, and price of drug products was highlighted by previous darknet studies as well (Bancroft & Reid, 2016; Munksgaard et al., 2022). In order to gain information on the analysed marketplaces, we collected additional data from the Gwern archive on dark marketplace closures1. To compile comprehensive information, we also used law enforcement documents on closures as well as a number of online forums31,32,34 dedicated to discussing dark marketplaces (see Supplementary Information Section S2).
Out of the selected marketplaces, 12 were subject to an exit scam, 9 were raided, 3 were voluntarily closed by their administrators, and 7 are still active. Out of the 31 marketplaces, 3 are marketplaces dedicated to fake and stolen IDs and credit cards. 2, we present the lifetimes of the selected marketplaces and the reasons behind their closures. We considered the entire transaction data of 31 dark marketplaces (see Supplementary Information Section S2) between June 18, 2011, and July 24, 2019. This dataset includes all the major marketplaces on the darknet as identified by the reports of law enforcement agencies3,31 and the World Health Organization32. We also considered transactions of all users who interacted with one of these marketplaces (dark marketplace’s “nearest neighbours”) after their first interaction with a dark marketplace.
It operated via darknets, anonymous networks that can only be accessed through specialized software like Tor Browser. The content of darknets makes up the dark web — Silk Road was the first modern dark web marketplace. Darknet markets are dynamic and constantly changing within the context of many disruptions, both external (e.g. law enforcement and denial of service attacks) and internal (exit scams). DNeT bulletins providing details on trends in darknet markets over time are available at the Drug Trends website, with the next bulletin due for publication at the end of March 2016. People have been organizing illicit trades via the Internet since the 1970s. Those early examples, though, were through closed networks and the actual exchanges of money and goods generally had to take place in person.
According to research from various security sources, a number of markets reared their heads as key players after Hydra’s shut down, each taking it in turn to lead the market. Similar to Hydra Market, a number of Russian darknet markets have risen up the rankings, the largest of which appears to be Mega Darknet Market, which received $40m in March alone. By looking at the timeline graphic we can see that the English language sphere of the darknet has been in flux since at least March 2019. Although the timeline is concentrated on the fuss among DNMs, it is not the whole story.
How Big is the Darknet Market?
While some companies do offer this service, be aware the results are always incomplete, because there are many private forums and sites that simply cannot be discovered or indexed by a scanner. Although more than 70 DWMs were observed at the end of last year, the four big Russian markets divide 80% of the total volume among them, while the western bitcoin-based market ASAP comes in 5th place with 7%. It took almost no time for the void left by Hydra to be filled, and dozens of new illicit markets emerged. These DWMs, mostly Russian-speaking, have repopulated 80% of the entire illegal ecosystem. According to TRM Labs’s research, these markets reached 24% more volume than the previous year of Hydra within the first five months of Hydra’s shutdown. This website is using a security service to protect itself from online attacks.
